From The Teat To The Bowl

For Fathers Day this year Sarah Jill and the boys got me a ice cream machine. It’s one of those really nice ones with wood grain outsides and was perfect for a father who likes to cook and host. So immediately I put it to the test and made everyone a nice mixture with the vanilla packet it came with. Added a few of my own ingredients to spice it up and the boys loved it. I sent a bowl to my neighbors to show hospitality in my neighborhood and it was a hit.

Really good ice cream though doesn’t come from whole milk and heavy cream at the grocery store It came from pure unprocessed milk straight from a cows utter. So me being the connected dad I am I reached out to friends and family to see who had a dairy cow we could milk and make true natural ice cream.

Just so happened, a friend knew a friend who had a dairy cow right down the road. So I introduced myself to Mrs. Sarah Wilson of W8 Farms and told her I had all of these boys who would like to learn to milk a cow and make ice cream.

When we arrived at W8 Farms I immediately knew these were my kinda people, as their was kids everywhere. W8 stands for the Wilson Eight, and of course I pulled up with all my boys so we fit right in.

Mrs Sarah took the boys and introduced them to Daisy Mae their Dexter Dairy Cow. It was awesome watching Ms Daisy walk herself straight to the barn to be milked. The gentle lady, and how else would you describe this wonderful cow, was perfect for these boys first milking excursion.

We all took our turn at the teat, even Sarah Jills cousin Jared that was staying the night, and it was definitely a experience the boys will never forget. At the end we milked 2 full pints from Daisy Mae with Mrs Sarah showing us how a professional milker fills the jug.

Before we left we got to know the Wilson family and found a lot of similarities, farming, produce, oil field, marine corps, heaps of kids running the yards, and my boys couldn’t stop talking about Daisy Mae.

If you are ever in the need of fresh produce visit W8 Farms Produce stand right out side of Van. They are a wonderful family and definetly hold a award in our heart for there hospitality.

Now, to make Ice Cream!!!
